If you’re in the midst of planning your wedding celebration, we know exactly what you’re going through. This is, after all, the biggest day of your life, and you want it to be practically perfect. That can cause you more than a little bit of stress as you search for all of the different pieces you need to finish your wedding day puzzle.
That includes a beautiful, affordable wedding venue, of course. Then there’s choosing the perfect dress, who to choose for music at your reception party, what food to serve, and picking out the invitations. Making sure you get the seating arrangement right is a big deal too, and don’t forget the flowers!
There’s one choice, however, that surpasses almost everything else in terms of importance. While all those other choices come and go on the big day itself, this choice will stick with you for the rest of your married life; your choice of photographer. Your wedding photographer is the one person who has the power to turn your big day into even bigger memories, memories that will be with you for a very long time.
If you’re wondering how to find and choose the perfect Vancouver photographer for your wedding (and your engagement too!), keep reading to find out how to do exactly that. In this guide, you’ll find the best tips, advice and actionable information you can use to find excellent Vancouver wedding photographers, and figure out which of them is the best for you and your soon-to-be-spouse. That way, when your big day is done and your guests have all gone home, you’ll be left with gorgeous wedding and engagement photos you’ll be proud to show friends and family for years to come.
This might seem like a question so obvious that it doesn’t need to be answered. However, many people don’t realize the intricacies of wedding photography in Vancouver and all of the different factors it entails. For example, there are several different genres of photographs that a Vancouver wedding photographer will need to shoot for most weddings. They include;
- Portraiture (Head and shoulder only)
- Family and Group Photography (Everyone together: say ‘cheese’!)
- Close-up Photography (The ring, the flowers, etc.)
- Documentary Photography (“How it Happened”)
- Event Photography (The entire event, venue, or location)
- Boudoir Photography (Sexy, intimate, sensual photos)
All of these different genres require different lenses and, more importantly, different knowledge about lighting, timing, and more. And, it’s not always people that will be photographed. Locations are important, as are objects like flowers, the ring, the cake, and the church. (And don’t forget your wedding gown!)
As you can see, wedding photography in Vancouver entails a wide range of functions and tasks, and expertise is needed for all of them. It’s not enough to simply hold up a camera and shoot pictures, a great Vancouver wedding photographer has to be a master of coordination, timing, patience, and diligence. Plus, they have to use their artistic and creative abilities at the same time.
What Does a Vancouver Wedding Photographer Do?
Before any photographs are ever shot your photographer has a lot of work to do. First, they have to convince you that they have the skill, experience, and expertise to make your wedding day (and engagement) look amazing. Once they do that, their work begins, usually a few weeks before your big day.
- Scouting your wedding venue and any locations nearby that would make great backdrops for pictures
- Arriving early on your wedding day to shoot pictures of the dress and, if you want them, sexy boudoir pictures as you get dressed.
- Taking photos of the groom and his groomsmen
- Shooting the church and surroundings, documentary style, plus guests as they arrive
- Meeting you at the church to shoot as you arrive, enter, get married, exit the church, and leave.
- Photographing flower girls and guests inside the church. That includes the ring exchange, your first kiss, and your vows.
- Taking group pictures at the church directly after the wedding with the entire family. In some cases, they’ll also go with you and your new spouse to nearby locations they’ve already scouted to take scenic outdoor pictures
Keep in mind that this is just your wedding. If you’re like most people and you hire your wedding photographer to take pictures of your wedding reception, that’s where their work truly gets intense. From taking photographs of the beautifully decorated tables and flower arrangements to the presents and wedding cake, your wedding photographer is going to be very busy while you and your guests are busy having a good time.
There are the classic photos, of course, including you throwing your bouquet over your shoulder, dancing with your father for the first time as a married woman, and your new spouse removing your garter. Plus, there’s also the first bites of your wedding cake!
Many of the photographs that they’ll take also need to be taken fast so that they get them before the moment passes. Reaction shots, smiling family members, champagne corks popping, you get the picture. In short, your chosen Vancouver wedding photographer will need to stay on their toes the entire time, making sure they capture every special moment.
That doesn’t mean they’re done, however, far from it. Some (very intelligent) Vancouver wedding photographers will stay around after the wedding party ends to sit with you and choose the photos you like best (or they can do that after you get back from your honeymoon). Some might also take shots of your guests leaving and night shots of you and your new spouse outside if the weather permits.
Developing and processing your photos comes next. This is one of the most time-consuming processes because most experienced Vancouver wedding photographers will take many more pictures than they use. There’s also lots of editing and adjusting colors to do, something that can take most Vancouver wedding photographers quite a few hours, if not days, to accomplish.
Last but not least, it is the job of the wedding photographer to take your engagement photos if that’s part of the package that you’ve purchased from them – it is most likely included if you choose a top Vancouver wedding photographer. Of course, that comes before the wedding itself but it’s still another big part of their job. By the way, we recommend that you make this part of your package regardless if it is included in one of you chosen Vancouver wedding photographers’ packages or not. It’s a great way to get to know your photographer and work with them before your big day so that, when it comes, you’ll already be comfortable working together.
Let’s be honest, the band might not be great, the food might be a little bland and your Uncle Fred might make a fool out of himself on the dance floor, but all of those memories will fade as the years go by. Your wedding photos, on the other hand, will be with you forever, a monument to your big day that, hopefully, will shine for years to come. The last thing you want is to have photos that are over-lighted, out of focus, off-kilter, or bland as buttermilk.
Also, keep in mind that, when it comes to wedding and engagement photos, there are no ‘do-overs’. If your photos are grainy, fuzzy, or just plain boring, you can’t say “OK, let’s take them again.” Once your wedding day passes, you’ll be stuck with those photos forever. If the person taking them isn’t up to the task, you might be left with an album full of photos that you shove in the back of the closet instead of displaying it (the album) proudly in your living room, man-cave, or she-shed.
And think about this; do you want to one day show your children or your grandchildren your pretty wedding day photos? Sure, you’re probably not thinking about that now but, in the years and decades to come, your wee little ones will want to see the photos of your big day. They might even ask you for some of those photos to hang on their walls in beautiful frames because, you know, they love you. If your wedding photographer doesn’t have the skills or expertise to take beautiful, displayable photographs, you might be too embarrassed to show them or give them to anyone, let alone your children.
The last reason why your choice of wedding photographer is so important is simply this; getting exactly what you want. The truth is, every Vancouver wedding photographer is different and they all have their own ‘eye’ for photos. Some will be experts in the art and take photos that are spot-on perfect. Others will have a more creative flair and use locations, props, and positions that bring out your fun, silly, or intellectual side. There will also be some Vancouver wedding photographers who have both, all of which will come into play on your big day and affect the results that you get when it’s all over. To ensure those photographic results make you smile every time you look at them, now and in the future, making the right choice today is a must.
Why Choosing a Professional Vancouver Photographer is Vital
Taking your engagement and wedding day photographs isn’t a task that you want to leave to a friend, family member, or anyone who’s not a bonafide expert. There’s no room for error and, as we mentioned above, you won’t get a second chance to take them. That’s why it’s important you choose a professional, experienced Vancouver wedding photographer to shoot your engagement and wedding pictures. Someone who has been in the business for at least a few years and photographed a wide variety of weddings (and has the photographic evidence to prove it). Below are a few more reasons why choosing a pro Vancouver wedding photographer is such an important choice:
1- Expertise and Experience
Sure, your friend, brother, or Aunt Margaret might have a decent camera. They might even have some basic photography skills. But ask yourself this; do they have years of experience shooting wedding photography (and couples) in and around Vancouver? Are they experts in lighting and staging? Do they have a creative flair that will help them to take unique, fun, interesting, and truly gorgeous photos? Do they know locations around your town and the city that would make interesting backdrops for your photos? If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, they shouldn’t be taking the important photos of your special day. (No offense to Aunt Margaret.)
2- Photography Equipment
Professional Vancouver wedding photographers usually have a large collection of different lenses. Wide-angle, fisheye, standard, macro, telephoto, and more. They need these to take different shots and create different moods and perspectives. They will also have different types of lighting, tripods, and other equipment that they can use to get creative, interesting, and memorable photographs that go beyond your everyday pictures and into the realm of art. If Aunt Margaret has all of that gear and equipment you might consider asking her to take your photos. However, we still recommend against doing that. See #3 to find out why.
3- Friends and Family Are Part of the Party. A Professional Vancouver Wedding Photographer is Not
So, let’s say your Aunt Margaret has all the equipment and maybe some skills too. Maybe she’s an amateur photographer who likes taking nature photos – and does all crazy types of photography or something along those lines. Sounds like a great way to go, yes? Well, frankly, no. No offense to Aunt Margaret but, as part of your family, she’s going to be part of the party. The problem with being part of the party is that Aunt Margaret will want to;
- Party hearty
- Get ‘high’
Hey, she’s your Aunt and she deserves to be able to do those things, we agree, but here’s the thing; all of them take away from what you really want her to be doing, which is taking your wedding pictures. She can’t take them while she’s eating or drinking, and she sure can’t take them if she’s dancing. Plus, let’s say that Aunt Margaret drinks a little too much and gets tipsy, or even drunk. Then what? You either have a drunk Aunt taking your important photographs or possibly nobody at all because they’re off in a corner fast asleep. Indeed, some would say that asking a family member to take your photographs is a little unfair because they won’t get to enjoy themselves as much as the rest of your guests.
Everyone will be getting together on your wedding day, no doubt. It’s a family affair and they all come in from north, south, east, and west. But what about your engagement photographs? If you’re going to be taking part in this relatively new trend, you’ll need someone who can be quickly available to take them, sometimes on a moment’s notice. See, your engagement photos aren’t scheduled, per se, but can be taken when, for example, you get a beautiful, sunny day. Maybe the morning forecast calls for a gorgeous sunrise (or the evening a gorgeous sunset) and you want to take advantage of the lighting and mood?
A professional Vancouver wedding photographer can be ready fast as they usually have all their gear and cameras ready to go, with batteries charged and lenses packed. That makes them a better choice if you want engagement photos that are more spontaneous and fun and take advantage of natural light and surroundings.
Finding a Vancouver wedding photographer isn’t all that difficult, truth be told. There are a lot of them out there, ready, willing, and able to take your wedding pics for you. That being said, finding a truly great Vancouver wedding photographer isn’t nearly as easy. Someone who has a true artistic flair and a unique style. A photographer that not only knows how to take good photographs but how to coax amazing photographs out of their subjects. A photographic artist to make you and your soul mate look absolutely amazing. To find that kind of photographer you’re going to have to do your due diligence, no doubt. Here are a few tips that will help:
Tip 1- Start Searching as Early as Possible
One thing we can tell you about the best Vancouver wedding photographers is this; they’re always booked. Sometimes for weeks and months in advance. If you start looking for one a few weeks before your wedding or engagement, chances are that the best will already be booked. That will leave you picking someone that you don’t want. It might work out, but then again it might not, so start searching early so that you can be sure to get your #1 choice.
Tip 2- Ask Friends, Family, and Colleagues for Recommendations (and then ask to see their photos)
If you know people who are married, you should ask them for their recommendation. If they give you their ‘thumbs up’ and a good suggestion, you should then politely ask to see their wedding album. Let’s be real, one person’s opinion can be vastly different from another’s. The photographer your friend Jen calls ‘amazing’ might, to you, be just so-so. On the other hand, Jen’s photographer might be the best, but you won’t know for sure unless you ask to see her wedding album.
Tip 3- Use Social Media as Much as You Can
For some people social media is their jam, and something they use, visit and post to every day. For some…it’s not. Whichever you are, here’s a fact; social media is an excellent way to find out everything you need to know about any Vancouver wedding photographer (or at least any that are worth your time). The reason why is that social media is like an open book about them. You’ll see photos from their past clients, and read comments that they’ve written (and comments clients have written about them). You’ll be able to see posts they’ve made about photography on their blog, pictures on their Instagram, and feedback from clients on their Facebook.
Social media gives you a real inside look into the world of the photographer. How they interact with people, their knowledge base, their expertise and so much more. You might even consider ‘following’ some photogs on their social media pages to see what they’re posting regularly. The insight you can glean from this is invaluable and will make your choice much easier.
Tip 4- Use Review Sites To Get ‘Social Proof’ of Photographers’ Skills
Years ago, if you wanted to know about a photographer, the best you could hope for was ‘word-of-mouth’ reviews from friends, relatives, your boss, or the nice lady next door. While that was certainly valuable, today there are review sites online that offer hundreds, if not thousands, of reviews of businesses big and small, including photographers.
On these sites, including The Knot, Google My Business, Wedding Wire, and several more, you can get unfiltered, raw reviews about photographers from all sorts of people. This is what’s called ‘social proof’ and it’s extremely valuable. For example, if you see that the Vancouver wedding photographer you’re thinking of using has hundreds of rave reviews from hundreds of clients, they’re probably a great choice. If, however, you see several, or dozens, of horrible reviews, you might want to stay far away from that particular photog.
Keep in mind that, if a photographer has one or two ‘bad’ reviews but the rest are all dripping with compliments and 5-stars, that’s relatively normal. It’s quite difficult, if not impossible, to make 100% of clients happy. Some, frankly, wouldn’t be happy even if their wedding was shot by Ansel Adams or Annie Liebowitz. So don’t let a couple of bad reviews put you off a photog who might be fantastic.
Tip 5- Check With the BBB
The Better Business Bureau or BBB for short was founded in 1912 with the intent of helping consumers find trustworthy businesses and charities. If someone has a problem, they can file a complaint with the BBB that anyone can see (in all its essence) if they search for that company. That goes for photographers also, so checking the BBB to make sure the photog you want to use doesn’t have any complaints is a good idea. If they have a lot, you might want to keep looking.
Tip 6- Meet With Several Vancouver Wedding Photographers In Person
Something to keep in mind is that, while you want an excellent photographer, you also want one that sees things your way, so to speak. Someone who will work with you, is open to suggestions, and will give you their unvarnished opinions. You don’t need to become friends with them (although many times it does happen), but it’s always a good thing when you and your photographer see eye-to-eye.
To know this means getting to know them, either at their studio, your home, or even at a restaurant or cafe. You’ll want to set aside at least 2 hours to do this so you can get a feel for who they are, how they think, and if they’re compatible with you and your spouse-to-be. We suggest doing this after you’ve already searched a good bit and narrowed down your choices, just so you don’t waste your time (and theirs).
That said, this time together can be extremely helpful in making your choice. It can also help on your big day too because you and your photographer will know each other and already be comfortable together. The truth is, on your wedding day you’ll likely be a bit stressed and anxious, so having someone you already know and trust taking your photos will be a great help in keeping you from freaking out too much.
Tip 7- Ask to See Their Portfolio
To know if a photographer is very good at what they do, you should always ask to see their portfolio. Most will have plenty and some will have special albums where they’ve placed some of their very best pieces. These days, you can also see them online and on their website, of course. In our opinion, however, seeing them in person is best as viewing photos on a computer, laptop, or phone can make them look different.
Also, don’t be shy about asking to see their work! Frankly, the best Vancouver wedding photographers will want to show off their work to you and get your approval. They know that, as the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words. Any photographer that doesn’t want to show you their portfolio is either a newbie without previous clients or is hiding the fact that they’re not so good at what they do. (i.e keep looking)
This is a relatively difficult question to answer specifically. The truth is, the price that you pay for your wedding photographer and their services will depend on a lot of factors. How many hours you hire them to spend photographing your special day, for example, and any extra services you might want. That includes photographs at a separate location, sexy boudoir photos only meant for you and your spouse, and other extras.
If you want a lot of extra photos of family and friends at the church and reception, your photographer might need to bring along an assistant, which would also add to your cost. Things like specialized wedding albums or extra-large prints also increase your price/quote.
Many photographers have package deals you can purchase that include certain specific things. If you pick one, you can sometimes add extras, but every photographer is different. The best can be quite flexible but don’t expect them to be cheap because. The truth is, they put a lot of time, energy, and money into developing their skills and putting together all of their equipment and gear.
All of that being said, the average cost right now in the Vancouver area for a wedding photographer is about $2500, but, that can go up substantially depending on what you want. A good suggestion is to set a budget and do your best to find a photographer who fits it, with the caveat that if you find one you love you’ll go a little higher to get them.
Your wedding day is one of the most important and special days of your life. If you want beautiful, fun, silly, and sexy memories from it that you’ll be proud as a peacock to show off in the years to come, hiring a top-notch Vancouver wedding photographer is your best choice.
